NSGEU/NUPGE health care workers show support for bargaining demands at information picket on April 4.
Halifax (05 April 2012) - As the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) entered into conciliation talks with the Capital District Health Authority (CDHA) for members employed as health care workers, union members and their supporters rallied outside of the Halifax Infirmery. The goal of the information picket was to demonstrate support for bargaining committee as it tries reach a contract to keep health care workers from falling farther behind the rising cost of living.

Talks broke off at the bargaining table in February 2012 prompting NSGEU/NUPGE to file for conciliation assistance in order to reach a fair deal. The union has initiated a strike vote to pressure the employer to return to the table or reach a fair settlement through conciliation. While the return rate of strike vote ballots has been good, members are encouraged to return their ballots promptly.
Conciliation meetings have been taking place since April 3 and end on April 5. The bargaining committee remains hopeful that these discussions will bring about a fair and respectful conclusion to bargaining. Members were frustrated by management's wage offer of one per cent in each year of the three-year agreement, in addition to other concessionary proposals.
