'Rather than waste time on discussions that were clearly going nowhere.'
Halifax (23 Dec. 2010) - The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) has applied for conciliation in its negotiations with the Capital District Health Authority (CDHA).
"Your bargaining committee has been negotiating the Local 42 collective agreement diligently on your behalf since June," the union says in an update on the talks.
"We regret to inform the membership that talks ended abruptly during our last meeting when we failed to reach agreement with the employer on any monetary issues. As a result of this stalemate the union has applied for conciliation," it adds.
"While progress was made on non-monetary issues during the talks we were unable to make inroads on virtually any monetary items once these proposals reached the table. The employer’s wage proposal was a 1% increase in 2009 and a 1% increase in 2010 and no other improvements to any monetary provisions of the
collective agreement," the update says.
"This is totally unacceptable to your bargaining committee. As it was evident that further talks would be futile, the decision was made to proceed to conciliation rather than waste time on discussions that were clearly going nowhere. While we are very disappointed in this recent development, we remain committed to achieving a fair collective agreement."
