Disappointment in movement at the bargaining table leads NSGEU/NUPGE to file for conciliation for members employed by the Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Centres.
Halifax (05 March 2012) - Negotiations between the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) and Nova Scotia Hearing and Speech Centres have broken off. The union has filed for conciliation since a large number of issues, including key monetary provisions, remain outstanding.
Conciliation is an option under the Nova Scotia Trade Union Act that takes place when regular negotiations fail to bring an agreement. Either party may apply to the Minister of Labour and Advanced Education requesting the services of a conciliation officer. This officer does not have the power to impose a settlement on either party. Instead, their role is to mediate between the parties and help them reach an agreement.
NSGEU/NUPGE will advise members once dates for conciliation are set. The union remains committed to reaching a solid tentative agreement which the bargaining committee can recommend to the membership.
