'This clearly shows a lack of respect for the members who provide police services.' - Joan Jessome
Halifax (28 April 2009) - The Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) is disappointed at the collapse of conciliation talks on behalf of approximately 180 police officers employed by the Cape Breton Regional Police Service.
The negotiations broke down last week when the employer declined to change an offer tabled last February. The next step, under provisions of the Nova Scotia Trade Union Act, is binding arbitration.
“It is very disappointing that the Cape Breton Regional Municipality has chosen not to bargain a collective agreement with our members,” says NSGEU president Joan Jessome.
“This clearly shows a lack of respect for the members who provide police services to the people of the Cape Breton Regional Municipality. The employer’s final offer fell far short of our latest proposal which we feel was comparable to increases being received by other police services in Nova Scotia."
NSGEU represents more than 26,000 women and men who provide quality public services across Nova Scotia.
