International conference participants learn from the NSGEU/NUPGE experience in developing and implementing a successful anti-bullying program.
Halifax (08 April 2013) – Susan Coldwell, coodinator for the Nova Scotia Government and & General Employees Union's (NSGEU/NUPGE) Bully-Free Workplaces Program, travelled to Japan to attend and present at the International Seminar on Workplace Bullying and Harassment in February. Invited by the Japan Institute for Labour Policy and Training, a research institute attached to the Department of Health, Labour, and Welfare, Coldwell shared the experiences and techniques that have made the NSGEU/NUPGE anti-bullying program one of the most successful in Canada.
Academics and experts in the field of labour issues from nine countries/areas – European Union, Canada, France, Germany, Korea, Sweden, United Kingdom, United States and Japan were invited to gather information, learn from the experiences of each participating country and to draw some policy implications through cross-national discussion and comparative analyses.
Coldwell also presented the Bully-Free Workplaces Program to the largest trade union in Japan, Ua Zensen, with 1.4 million members.
Launched in September 2010, after 18 months of developing, field testing, evaluating and revising, the NSGEU/NUPGE Bully-Free Workplaces Program helps workers and managers identify and stop workplace bullying. The program uses peer-to-peer facilitation as an effective method to begin discussions about workplace bullying and to facilitate solutions. The union has trained members as facilitators who are available to go into workplaces across the province to deliver the program.
