Resolutions include calls for protection of public services, enhancement of health & safety, and continued funding and support for campaigns to improve mental health services.
Halifax (24 May 2011) - The Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union's (NSGEU/NUPGE) Biennial Convention starts Wednesday, May 25, 2011 and runs until Saturday, May 28 at the Westin Nova Scotian Hotel in Halifax.
The theme for this year is “Our Province, Our Services, Worth Protecting”.
Convention opens Wednesday evening with the Nova Scotia Mass Choir.
Approximately 285 delegates will be attending this year, representing 85 locals from across the province.
There are 82 resolutions including those that call for the continued protection of public services, the enhancement of health & safety including protection from workplace bullying and psychological harassment, and the continued funding and support for campaigns to improve mental health services.
Resolutions will be voted on by delegates and will set the direction of the union for the next two years.
The President of the Nova Scotia Federation of Labour, Rick Clarke, will bring greetings on Thursday at 9:15 am.
Joan Jessome will deliver her President’s report on Thursday morning at 10 am. The Executive Director, Keiren Tompkins, will follow with his report at 11:05 am.
The keynote speaker is Larry Brown, the Secretary-Treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) who will address the Convention on Friday at 11 am.
Each of Nova Scotia’s main political leaders have accepted an invitation to address Convention and bring greetings on behalf of their parties:
- Premier Darrell Dexter, leader of the New Democratic Party, will address Convention on Thursday at 1:30 pm;
- Liberal leader Stephen McNeil will address Convention on Thursday at 9 am; and
- Progressive Conservative leader Jamie Baillie will address Convention on Friday at 9 am.
The NSGEU continues to push for more action in the areas of mental health and health & safety in the workplace. This year NSGEU is very pleased to present guest speaker, Mary Anne Baynton, RSW, MSW, on Thursday at 6:30 pm. Baynton works with employers, organizations, unions and associations that wish to improve, address or resolve workplace issues related to individual or organizational mental health. She currently serves as a member of the Mental Health Commission of Canada’s Workforce Advisory Committee.
Elections for the union’s executive committee will be held on Saturday morning.
