Two-year deal ratified after 'a lot of hard work' by NSGEU negotiators who were constrained by a climate of 'ongoing program review' within the government.
Halifax (26 Aug. 2010) - A tentative agreement covering 7,700 civil service members has been ratified by the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE).
NSGEU members across the province voted on the two-year proposal reached earlier by the union and the province's public service commission.
“A lot of hard work has gone into reaching this agreement and I would like to acknowledge the time and effort put in by the civil service bargaining committee and our chief negotiator, Keiren Tompkins,” said NSGEU president Joan Jessome.
The agreement includes enhanced job security in light of the government's ongoing program review and other improvements, including vacation and health and safety. It includes a 1% economic adjustment annually. The agreement is retroactive to April 1 this year and remains in effect until March 31, 2012.
Civil service employees provide valuable public services in communities across Nova Scotia. They work in natural resources, transportation, food and inspection services, social services, community services, the courts, Access Nova Scotia offices, highway safety, occupational health and safety and numerous other areas.
