NBU's 38th convention a big success

The New Brunswick Union of Public and Private Employees (NBUPPE/NUPGE) held their 38th Convention in Fredericton on October 16 & 17. Close to 300 delegates from across the province reflected on the past two years and debated new policies and initiatives for the next two years.

Fredericton (27 Oct. 2010) - The New Brunswick Union of Public and Private Employees (NBUPPE/NUPGE) held their 38th Convention (the second under their new Biennial format) in Fredericton on Oct. 16 & 17.

It was two days filled with review of highlights of the past two years and significant plans for the coming two years.

All this was capped off with the election of the NBUPPE President, 1st Vice-President, 2nd Vice-President and a host of members to various committees.

Susie Proulx-Daigle was re-elected to another two year term as President of NBUPPE.

"Naturally, I am very pleased to continue to represent our members as President of N. B. Union for another two years," explained Ms. Proulx-Daigle, "and to continue the work which we started. Upcoming events are resolving the negotiations with SHCP, Paramedical and Clerical and Regulatory, as well as renovations to our building."

Ms. Proulx-Daigle continued, "Our union is proactive on many fronts such as building workplace committees, activist education, and offering leadership and solutions to complex issues facing our province in the area of pensions, health care, education and the economy to name just a few."

Approximately 290 members participated in the two and a half day event representing all 23 bargaining units. Seventeen resolutions were adopted. Several bargaining units elected new members to their respective Executives.

Larry Brown spoke to delegates at the convention in his role as national secretary-treasurer of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE).

He talked about government cuts to public services and their effect on families and communities, and pointed to NUPGE's new All Together Now! campaign as key to fighting back.

"Our governments do not have a spending problem, they have a revenue problem," said Brown. "We've trained over 100 Champions 4 Change across the country to spread the word about the importance of promoting quality public services and tax fairness."

"It's about starting a conversation and creating a buzz about these important issues – here in New Brunswick and across the country," said Brown.

Duff Conacher, coordinator of Democracy Watch, also spoke about the key issues and policies required to have good government such as a registry of lobbyists and the need for greater transparency.

Saturday evening’s banquet recognized the key players in the NB Power Not For Sale Coalition, and the entertainment was LUCIEN (a.k.a. Marshall Button) who kept everyone laughing with his unique perspective on New Brunswick.
