N.B. government blocks employee access to webmail

Decision prevents legal bargaining agent from communicating by e-mail with employees at work.

Fredericton (1 Feb. 2011) - The New Brunswick government has blocked employee access to all webmail including Gmail, Hotmail and Yahoo mail. The reason given is concern over security related to viruses and malware.

The move has also blocked e-mail addressed to government employees by their legal bargaining agent, the New Brunswick Union of Public and Private Employees (NBUPPE/NUPGE).

The union is currently looking into the issue and deciding how best to respond to the situation.

In the meantime, the only way for employees to get e-mail from the union or from webmail sources is from computers outside the workplace.

"If you would prefer future (union) e-mails to be sent directly to your home e-mail address, please let us know," the union is advising its members.
