In 1995, Canada’s House of Commons unanimously passed a motion recognizing February each year as Black History Month.
Ottawa (5 Feb. 2010) - To celebrate Black History Month, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) has released a poster in its ongoing series, One Good Idea Deserves Another - Full Human Rights for All.

In 1995, Canada’s House of Commons unanimously passed a motion recognizing February each year as Black History Month. With each passing year the celebration has gained ever broader recognition across the country.
This February, and throughout the year, NUPGE is proud to celebrate the rich achievements and contributions to the trade union movement, to the cause of social justice and to society as a whole of men and women of African and Caribbean origin.
NUPGE believes it is vitally important to ensure that workers of colour – together with all workers across the country – be especially respected during this time of severe economic recession and that they not become scapegoats for the economic failures of employers and governments.
Black History Month reminds everyone of the important contributions to the economy and to communities that has been made by Canadians of African and Caribbean descent. It also demonstrates that these gains were won by people organizing together in all walks of life.
