St. John's (24 July 2013) — Members of the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) are trying to absorb the news of the death of a worker with the Department of Transportation and Works which occurred on July 23. The incident took place in the morning near Flat Bay on the Trans-Canada Highway (TCH).

“We are shocked and deeply saddened to learn that another of our highway workers has died as a result of a tragic occupational accident,” said NAPE President Carol Furlong. “On behalf of all NAPE members, I extend deepest sympathies to his family and colleagues.”

James Clancy, National President of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), echoes Furlong's sentiments. "We know that many public sector workers put their lives on the line when they go in to work every day," said Clancy. "But it's still a shock, and it's heart-breaking when these accidents happen.
