The videos may be only 30 seconds but iit sends a serious and direct message: "Don't be that guy."
St. John's (15 April 2019) — "Hey guys, listen up. I don't dress for you." This is the way a new video, launched by the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE), begins.
Video series exposes offensive behaviour
"No matter how tight my shirt, jeans, no matter how short my skirt, dress, whatever. At work, the gym, wherever. I'm not sending you a signal."
The videos may be only 30 seconds but they send a serious and direct message: "Don't be that guy."
In a recent CBC interview, Jerry Earle, NAPE President, said, "That guy is the one that's making comments … the person who's going into a workplace and making innuendo."
Resources and support included in campaign
NAPE/NUPGE produced this video as part of a campaign to highlight, and fight, harassment at work. Earle said, "Women go to work to work — period. There’s no room for workplace harassment. And just joking is not a defense."
Earle added that the campaign was a natural fit for NAPE because 68 per cent of union members are women.
The campaign includes other short videos on workplace harassment, including on the use of pet names, the idea that women don't dress for guys, and consent. The videos, plus great resources for those experiencing harassment or violence. are gathered on the campaign website, https://dontbethatguy.ca.
