"While this campaign focuses on NAPE/NUPGE members and the businesses that employ them, the broader goal is to support our local economy by encouraging people to buy local.” — Jerry Earle, NAPE President
St. John's (04 July 2017) — In December of 2016, the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) launched an advertising campaign encouraging the people of the province to support local businesses and the workers who make them tick.
NAPE/NUPGE ad campaign encourages keeping money in province
The ads ran province-wide on television, radio, and Facebook. Jerry Earle, NAPE President, explained the campaign this way: “We have all seen some distressing stories in the media about local businesses closing their doors. Local businesses are the engine of our economy. We wanted to do something to encourage people to support them and the workers in their communities who create world-class goods and services. While this campaign focuses on NAPE/NUPGE members and the businesses that employ them, the broader goal is to support our local economy by encouraging people to buy local.”
Buying local builds strong communities
Unlike money spent online or on businesses that don’t operate directly in the province, every time someone chooses to spend their dollars on goods and services made in the province, that money stays and circulates in the local economy. It is money that goes toward supporting local workers and their families — members of our community. From small mom and pop shops to national companies that produce goods and services here in the province, buying local is good for our economy.
This campaign also shines a light on NAPE/NUPGE members who work in the private sector. Many people may not realize NAPE/NUPGE unites and represents over 5000 workers in the private sector across the province. These are people in communities that proudly produce union-made goods and provide services for an array of businesses, including Purity Factories, Browning Harvey (Pepsi), Safety NL, Comfort Inn Airport and Clancy’s Kitchen, Country Ribbon, and Labatt.
