The pay equity adjustments for the 3 groups will cost $8.4 million over 10 years. The pay increase at the end of the 10 years will result in hourly rates' increases from as low as just over $2 to as high as almost $9 per hour, depending on the classifications.
Fredericton (28 June 2017) — The New Brunswick government has extended pay equity to 3 more provincial government employee groups. The employees are members of the New Brunswick Union (NBU/NUPGE) and work as professional support workers in schools, specialized health care workers and medical science professionals.
Wage gap revealed, and corrected
The provincial government had made a promise during the last provincial election to implement the Pay Equity Act in all government sectors. The pay equity adjustments for the 3 groups will cost $8.4 million over 10 years. The pay increase at the end of the 10 years will result in hourly rates' increases from as low as just over $2 to as high as almost $9 per hour, depending on the classifications. The adjustment clearly reveals the wage discrepancy between men and women that existed prior to this announcement.
In a June 27 news release by the New Brunswick government, Susie Proulx-Daigle, NBU President stated, “We are pleased with the results of the study and the resulting pay increases for those found to have been underpaid compared to their male colleagues.” She cautioned, “There is still work to be done; however, this is a step forward for pay equity in our province.”
