Union now represents almost 700 employees at B.C.’s second largest casino.
Burnaby (26 May 2009) - Another 120 employees at the Gateway Casinos facility in Burnaby have voted overwhelmingly to join the B.C. Government and Service Employees’ Union (BCGEU/NUPGE) to improve their working conditions.
The workers include servers, bartenders, cooks and kitchen staff, dishwashers, bussers and porters. They cast ballots in a vote supervised by the B.C. Labour Relations Board (BCLRB).
BCGEU president Darryl Walker thanked the new members for choosing BCGEU to help them improve their workplace.
"We are pleased to be the union of choice for B.C. casino workers and we welcome these new members to our ranks. We’ll move quickly to address their priority issues like wages, job security, and working conditions," Walker adds.
The vote brings to almost 700 the number of BCGEU members at Gateway’s flagship casino in Burnaby. BCGEU also represents 500 more casino workers at Gateway facilities in the Interior. Contract negotiations are already underway for most Gateway Burnaby employees, Walker says.
