MGEU welcomes new members

Local 449 is the third new Local in the MGEU/NUPGE in the last 3 months, a trend that doesn’t surprise Gawronsky.

Winnipeg (29 August 2018) — Manitoba's Canadian Base Operators are the latest group of workers to unionize with the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE), the province’s largest union.

Joining MGEU/NUPGE means making meaningful improvement to workplace

Based out of Southport in Portage, the union’s newest members provide a wide range of supports, from housekeeping to ice clearing to navigational equipment maintenance for rescue, firefighting and Canadian defence missions.

“These folks provide vital assistance both to the Canadian Department of National Defence and other commercial clients,” said Michelle Gawronsky, MGEU President. “Our union is eager to work with members and the employer to address their concerns and build a better workplace for everyone.”

These members will make up MGEU Local 449. It is the third new Local to join the MGEU/NUPGE in the last 3 months, a trend that doesn’t surprise Gawronsky.

“I think more and more people are becoming aware of how a union can help them bring about real and meaningful improvements in their workplace,” Gawronsky said.

The next step for the new members is to elect a Local Executive.
