MGEU thinks that Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries “has the expertise, capacity and a proven track record selling a controlled product in a socially responsible way.”
Winnipeg (3 Jan. 2017) —The legalization of non-medical marijuana is coming to Canada and each province is preparing their regulatory framework for how it will be sold.
With that in mind, the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union (MGEU/NUPGE) has released a new position paper about the sale of non-medical marijuana in Manitoba.
Public model the best way forward
Marijuana Legalization in Manitoba—The MGEU/NUPGE Perspective urges the Manitoba Government to proceed with a public model administered and operated by Manitoba Liquor and Lotteries, citing that the crown corporation “has the expertise, capacity and a proven track-record selling a controlled product in a socially responsible way.”
Need to protect young people
Research shows there are potential health risks associated with the free-flowing supply and unrestricted usage of marijuana, especially for young Manitobans. In the paper, the MGEU/NUPGE calls on the government to mitigate these risks by choosing a public model that ensures safe sales, an impaired driving strategy, improved treatment options, public education, good family-supporting jobs and quality service.
