In the aftermath of a devastating fire in Thompson, Manitoba the members of the MGEU are working hard to provide support and comfort to those affected.
Thompson (1 Oct. 2019) - More than 180 Thompson, Manitoba residents have been displaced from their homes following a suspicious fire in the north tower at the Forest View Suites. In the aftermath of the fire the members of the Manitoba Government and General Employees Union (MGEU/NUPGE) are working hard to provide support and comfort to those affected.
Challenging situation for those affected
“This is a significant and challenging situation for those living in this building. It’s very fortunate that no one was killed in this fire,” said MGEU President Michelle Gawronsky who was in Thompson this week.
“I spoke with MGEU members, including several social workers, who are working with the displaced families to help them find places to stay. Everyone involved is doing a great job working around the clock and pouring their hearts into their community to do everything they can to help right now.”
Arson suspected
The fire broke out early Monday morning at the complex located on 424 Princeton Drive. The fire was contained and extinguished on the fifth floor, but there is now extensive smoke damage throughout the building.
All occupants continue to be displaced staying at an emergency shelter set up at a nearby community complex or making other arrangements to stay with family or friends. Manitoba Employment and Income Assistance is working with residents to access alternative housing and funding.
Arson is suspected, while the exact cause of the fire is under investigation. It’s expected it will be some time before the building is deemed safe and families can return home.
