“Currently the PCH workers in Nelson House are making significantly less than PCH workers in the rest of Manitoba, including in Thompson, only 100 km away. These are dedicated workers that care for the elders in the community and deserve to be treated fairly.” — Michelle Gawronsky, MGEU President
Winnipeg (18 Oct. 2016) — On October 13, ballots were counted and members of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) employed at Nisichawayasihk Personal Care Home (PCH) in Nelson House voted to give their Bargaining Committee a strike mandate.
No progress on improved funding, MGEU/NUPGE members prepare for job action
The collective agreement expired on March 31, 2016. On July 28, MGEU/NUPGE members rejected the final offer received from the employer on June 30.
MGEU/NUPGE then allowed time for the employer to seek further funding from the federal government before they decided on their next steps. To date the MGEU/NUPGE has not received an update on these funding efforts, therefore, MGEU/NUPGE members felt they had no choice but to prepare for job action in order to get a fair deal.
