Lois Wales, a cardiology technologist, was elected president of the Mantioba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) at the union's convention this past weekend. It is the first time in MGEU’s history that a woman has been elected president.
Winnipeg (25 Oct. 2010) - For the first time in MGEU’s history, the union has elected a female president. Lois Wales (Cardiology Technologist - Area 5 Technical, Professional, Paramedical Component) was voted to a two-year term as MGEU President by more than 300 delegates at the MGEU’s 61st Convention held this past weekend.
“Our members are our union, and we’re stronger together. Now let’s get to work! We’ve got lots to do!” exclaimed Wales as she thanked her supporters and fellow members in her acceptance speech.
Wales has been active in the union for more than three decades and has served as MGEU’s 1st Vice-President since 1998. She has chaired many of the union’s standing committees and currently sits on the Civil Service Master Bargaining Committee.
“Everyone who ran in our elections today are people who are willing to fight for what they believe in,” said Wales. “That makes me so proud to be part of this union.”
Wales will begin her term as President on Monday, October 25.
