"Congratulations go out to Sister Michelle and all the other Officers and Directors elected at the Convention this weekend,"said James Clancy. "On behalf of the 340,000 members across the country, we look forward to working with each of you in the coming days to move the issues of fairness, equality and justice forward."
"Our thanks, as well, goes to all those who put their names forward for office. Your leadership and involvement will be crucial in the days ahead," Clancy continued. "Labour rights are under attack. We need the strength and resolve to work together for the best interests of our members, our communities and our country. We are on the front-line to protect and improve our public services and to act as a voice for those who are struggling. We must focus on the things that inspire and connect us rather than on the issues that could divide our movement."
"I look forward to continuing our work with you to make Canada a much fairer, more equal place to live. Together, we can make a difference."
MGEU Convention highlighted the work members do in the workplace, in the community, and in society to make life better
The purpose of the Convention was to elect not only the future Board of Directors but to have elected delegates vote on resolutions that will set the course for the union over the next two years. Delegates heard from many speakers, including, Nora Loreto, labour activist and writer, Kevin Rebeck, President of the Manitoba Federation of Labour, and James Clancy, National President of the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE), of which MGEU is a Component. Delegates debated issues critical to the members across the province, to the union and to the labour movement. Front and centre in discussions was the role unions play to improve conditions for members, but also to the broader community.
"Promoting tax fairness, strengthening labour rights and protecting quality public services are things that affect everyone. By working together to build a movement that supports these issues, members are making a considerable contribution to the equality of all of us," said James Clancy. "Thank you for everything you do to make us stronger."
