“We are proud to support the MFL on this initiative, calling on the government to do the right thing and lift the freeze on minimum wage.” — Michelle Gawronsky, President Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union
Winnipeg (3 Oct. 2016) —The minimum wage will increase in every province but two this year – Newfoundland and Labrador and Manitoba. That means that for the first time in nearly two decades the minimum wage in Manitoba will stay the same – despite steady cost of living increases.
Labour movement joins demand for increase to minimum wage
The Manitoba Federation of Labour (MFL) is leading an initiative to do something about that. In an open letter to the Manitoba Premier, Kevin Rebeck, President of the Mfl, along with 60 community, labour and non-profit organizations called on the Premier to increase the minimum wage.
“Prices on everything keep going up. Groceries, utility bills, gas, it never seems to end. Working families were counting on an increase to minimum wage. Not to get rich, but to make ends meet,” says Michelle Gawronsky, President of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union. “We are proud to support the MFL on this initiative, calling on the government to do the right thing and lift the freeze on minimum wage.”
Share your opinion on the minimum wage with the Premier
The government has announced it is seeking feedback from Manitobans on the minimum wage. If you support an increase to the minimum wage, visit mfl.ca/minimumwage to view the open letter and help spread the word on social media by sharing the images the MFL has developed.
Let's give low-income Manitobans a raise.
