Manitoba will proclaim Nov. 6 “Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day”

On November 6th the Government of Manitoba and MGEU will recognize the importance of highlighting the work of Manitoba's Community Social Service Workers and to acknowledge their vital contribution to our communities.

Winnipeg (23 Oct. 2009) - Celebrate Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day on Nov. 6th.

Every day, and often through the night, thousands of Manitobans provide care for a living through their jobs at community social service agencies.

In group homes, in treatment and drop-in centres, in shelters and training facilities, they help guide our most vulnerable families, children and teens. They see the potential in people living with disabilities. They give refuge and hope to the abused, the addicted, and the disenfranchised. They help to make Canada one of the best places in the world to live.

That’s why it’s so important to find a way to highlight the work of these caring Manitobans, and to acknowledge their vital contribution to our communities.

On Friday, November 6, the Government of Manitoba will officially proclaim “Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day.” To celebrate this event, please join the Minister of Family Services and Housing Gord Mackintosh and Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) President Peter Olfert in the Legislative dining room, 1:30 pm to 2:30 pm, to recognize the efforts of all Community Social Service Workers.

About Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day

The idea for an appreciation day to honour community social service workers originated at a 2007 NUPGE conference of community-based social service workers. It was envisaged as a day to focus attention on the importance of the sector to the well-being of the country and to acknowledge the contributions these workers make. This is the second annual Community Social Service Workers Appreciation Day.

The National Union is urging everyone to mark the occasion by taking time to appreciate the contribution these workers make to strengthen communities and families across the country. To see what’s happening in other communities visit cssworkerscare.ca.
