Manitoba government announces plans for self-regulation of paramedics

Winnipeg (30 Nov. 2016) — On November 23, Michelle Gawronsky, President of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE), commended the government’s announcement that plans are underway to implement self-regulation of Manitoba paramedics.

Speaking at a news conference, she said the MGEU/NUPGE represents almost all of the province’s 1,000 or more paramedics and has been advocating for years for self-regulation.

“Our paramedics are dedicated health professionals,” Gawronsky said. “This will improve patient care and provide consistency, transparency, and accountability in the delivery of emergency medical care.” 

She thanked the government for coming forward as an early advocate for self-regulation and for maintaining the position that paramedicine deserves to be recognized as a profession.  

“I look forward to meeting soon with Reg Toews, who will be leading the consultation with stakeholders,” she said. 

Gawronsky commends Paramedic Association of Manitoba for its leadership

Gawronsky also acknowledged the contributions of the Paramedic Association of Manitoba in moving the process forward. 

“Your strength and knowledge was inspiring, and all Manitoba paramedics owe you their thanks for your hard work on this file,” she said. “All of us, as Manitobans, will benefit from this commitment to professionalizing EMS care.”
