Manitoba and B.C. proclaim October 18 Health Care Aide Day

“With our aging population and the demands being placed on our healthcare system today, these individuals are truly unsung heroes” - MGEU/NUPGE President Lois Wales.

Winnipeg/Victoria (18 Oct. 2012) - The legislatures in Manitoba and British Columbia have declared October 18 as Health Care Aide (Assistant) Day recognizing the work of the women and men who provide front-line care for our most vulnerable citizens.

Health Care Aides ensure that their patients remain independent for as long as possible. They work in a variety of settings; including home, community and residential care.

There are nearly 50,000 Health Care Aides/Assistants in Manitoba and British Columbia.

“With our aging population and the demands being placed on our healthcare system today, these individuals are truly unsung heroes,” says Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) President Lois Wales.

“Often they don’t receive the recognition they deserve for keeping our system going. Which is why, on behalf of every MGEU/NUPGE member, I’m pleased to say ‘thank you’ to all of our Health Care Aides in Manitoba for their contribution.”

The B.C. Proclamation notes that "Health Care Assistants have demonstrated to be an indispensable component in the safety and quality of personal care for patients, clients and residents."
