Members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE), who are the maintenance and trades workers at Cape Breton University, are looking for an agreement in order to avoid a strike.
Halifax (21 Oct. 2010) - NSGEU served notice of strike on Tuesday on behalf of their members of Local 18 who are maintenance and trades workers at Cape Breton University.
Allowing for the 48 hours following the notice, the Local will be in a legal strike position as of 12:01 a.m. on Friday.
The contract expired July 2009.
The outstanding issues are wages. The Local’s Bargaining Committee is asking for the same increase received by the Faculty Association - 2.9% for three years.
"We are asking for the same thing they put on the table back in the spring," says NSGEU President Joan Jessome. "We would like to come to an agreement and avoid any disruption in service."
There are 13 members of the bargaining unit. They are carpenters, plumbers, electricians, maintenance workers, rink attendants and heating plant operators.
