'NAPE is at a loss to understand the haste in moving on the matter.' - Carol Furlong.
St. John's (14 Oct. 2009) - The Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE) says layoff notices have been issued to Lewisporte laboratory and x-ray staff.
The notices were delivered when Health Minister Jerome Kennedy was assuring concerned citizens he would meet with them regarding closure of the clinic.
Staff working at the clinic received notices on Oct. 7 and were instructed to choose between layoff or displacement and make their choice known in writing by Oct. 14, says NAPE president Carol Furlong.
"Obviously, it is premature to be issuing layoff notices until the new minister makes a final decision," Furlong said. "NAPE is at a loss to understand the haste in moving on the matter.”
The clinic provides blood collection, laboratory testing and general x-ray services to the residents of Lewisporte and area. Approximately 500 x-rays are taken at the clinic each month.
