Jessome was the first woman elected president of the NSGEU/NUPGE in 1999. With this re-election she broke another record as she is now the longest serving president in the union’s history.
Ottawa (14 May 2013) - Joan Jessome has been acclaimed for her 8th term as President of the Nova Scotia Government & General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE).
Longest serving President
Jessome was the first woman elected to the position in 1999. With this re-election she broke another record as she is now the longest serving president in the union’s history.
Other positions in the provincial executive were heavily contested.
McPhee, MacLean, Murphy, Rioux elected
There were five nominees for the position of Secretary-Treasurer. In the end, the incumbent, Darren McPhee, a social worker, was re-elected.
Delegates also re-elected Jason MacLean, a correctional officer, as 1st Vice-President.
Kelly Murphy, a group home worker, was elected as 2nd Vice-President, and Dustin Rioux, a deputy sheriff, as 3rd Vice-President.
Guest speakers included Premier Dexter
Highlights of the four-day convention included a keynote address from author and columnist, Linda McQuaig, a speech from Premier Darrell Dexter that brought the delegates to their feet, and an overwhelming show of support for the fired workers at Just Us Coffee and a number of other charitable causes.
