“We are witnessing dramatic changes in the composition of our membership and broader societal shifts in population. We need to be proactive about making unions and workplaces inclusive spaces for all workers.” ― Larry Brown, NUPGE President
Ottawa (19 Nov 2019) ― The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is proud to introduce the Diversity and Inclusion in Our Unions series. This new body of work will be a group of publications that cover topics that include but are not limited to:
- Racism
- Transgender and gender-expansive rights
- Justice for Indigenous peoples
- Rights for people with disabilities
- Islamophobia
The first publication in this series Diversity and Inclusion in Our Unions: An Introduction is available to read online or download as PDF.
The National Union is strongly committed to achieving full equality, justice, and participation for everyone, regardless of race, age, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, gender identity, gender expression, citizenship status, or ability. As a union, we must always be committed to achieving equality for all. Systemic discrimination and the oppression of people harms not only those targeted but all of us. It divides us as workers and as people.
To continue to be an effective voice for improving the lives of working people, unions need to be relevant to all workers. It is our hope that the Diversity and Inclusion in Our Unions series can serve as an educational tool for our members and for all Canadians.
