The changes are a direct result of HSAA's ongoing lobby efforts with Alberta Health Services.
Edmonton (25 Nov. 2009) - Beginning on Jan. 1, 2010, members of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) who suffer from diabetes - along with members of their families - will benefit from improved coverage for insulin pumps and related supplies. The changes are a direct result of HSAA's ongoing lobbying efforts with Alberta Health Services (AHS).
HSAA and AHS have agreed to change the application of the Letter of Understanding #5, re: Employee Benefits in the Provincial Collective Agreement. The improved coverage could also influence decisions on how to best allocate 2010 funds in flexible spending accounts.
The changes in coverage will be effective Jan. 1, 2010. They include the following:
- Purchase of insulin pumps can be directly billed through a pharmacy. A maximum payment of $7,000 per five-year period will be applied.
- Insulin pump supplies, including infusion sets, syringe/reservoirs and tubing will not be subject to the maximum payment for insulin pumps. There will be 100% coverage through direct billing.
- There will be no coverage for glucose transmitters and sensors.
- There is a process for members who received payment or reimbursement during the 2009 calendar year that provides less payment for insulin pumps and supplies than contemplated by this new Letter of Understanding. Claims should be submitted before the end of 2009.
