HSAA supports AUPE members in Cold Lake

"Remember, while this is not our immediate struggle, we may need the help of our friends one day when we are in a struggle of our own. It is important to make our friends before we need them." — Scott MacDougall, HSAA Board member – North District

Edmonton (16 Feb. 2016) — Thirty health care workers from the Points West Living senior's care facility in Cold Lake, Alberta, have been locked out since mid-December. Even though Points West Living is one of the most profitable and fastest growing for-profit seniors care providers operating in Alberta, receiving millions in public funding each year, they refuse to give their workers pay that is anywhere close to the industry standard. Most of these workers are part-time or casuals who do not have appropriate training and are operating at inappropriate staffing levels.

Join the bus to Cold Lake to support locked-out workers at seniors' care facility

The Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) is showing its support for the workers at Points West Living, members of the Alberta Union of Public Employees (AUPE), who are being mistreated.

On February 18, HSAA/NUPGE will be sending a bus from Edmonton to Cold Lake, stopping at points in between to pick up members and supporters, to boost the spirits of these workers by walking the picket line with them.

History tells us that these shows of solidarity go a long way to keep locked-out or striking workers motivated in the struggle in which they find themselves.

Solidarity builds strength

HSAA/NUPGE is asking people to volunteer, to participate and to encourage other members and supporters to join as well. HSAA/NUPGE will provide transportation from scheduled stops along the way, as well as food, supplies, education and motivation.

As Scott MacDougall, HSAA Board member – North District, and Chair of the Political Action Committee says, "Remember, while this is not our immediate struggle, we may need the help of our friends one day when we are in a struggle of our own. It is important to make our friends before we need them."
