The Mustard Seed has been serving people experiencing poverty and homelessness in Alberta since the 1980s.
Edmonton (06 Feb. 2018) — On December 12, 2017, a group of 8 members of Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE), along with some family members, volunteered at the Mustard Seed in Edmonton to prepare and serve a meal to the less fortunate in the spirit of Christmas.
Giving back to community
The HSAA/NUPGE members are environmental health officers with Alberta Health Services, who are passionate about giving back to the community in which they live. This was the fourth year of volunteering at the Mustard Seed and the payoff is enormous. There is such a sense of community and care. HSAA/NUPGE members say it is always so rewarding.
This year, the members sought financial aid from HSAA’s Social Justice Committee for this event. The group of volunteers was responsible for raising $1,000 to pay for the evening meal and were thrilled to learn that the committee agreed to contribute $500. It was a huge financial burden off the shoulders of the small group.
Volunteers would like to thank the HSAA Social Justice Committee for the generous financial assistance and for giving back to the community. The members were proud to represent HSAA/NUPGE and to highlight all the good work the union does.
The Mustard Seed
The Mustard Seed has been serving people experiencing poverty and homelessness in Alberta since the 1980s. It has become a haven for those needing help, with hundreds of people relying on the organization for food, clothing, counselling and other support services, such as housing assistance, employment coaching and spiritual development.
