Mediation begins in October 2012 for HSAA/NUPGE members employed by Carewest.
Edmonton (16 July 2012) - Members of the Health Sciences Association of Alberta (HSAA/NUPGE) employed by Carewest have secured mediation dates for October 2, 3 and 4, 2012, almost a year after negotiations began.
On June 21, the union requested the assistance of a mediator to assist with contract talks with Carewest. Contract talks over the final week did not progress sufficiently towards a settlement, with the employer's proposal being less than the union's provincial bargaining settlement.
This process involves the mediator meeting with the parties to see if she/he can resolve the outstanding issues and determine if a settlement can be reached. The mediator also has the ability to issue non binding recommendations to the parties about terms for a settlement. If no settlement can be reached in mediation or if the mediator feels there can be no prospect of settlement the mediator can choose not to issue non binding recommendations. In such scenarios, the contract dispute would proceed to interest arbitration.
HSAA/NUPGE represents over 100 members at Carewest.
