St. John's (22 May 2009) - More than 1,700 hospital support staff workers at Central Health Newfoundland have voted to join the Newfoundland and Labrador Association of Public and Private Employees (NAPE/NUPGE).
The provincial labour board decided last year that health care support staff at each of the province's four health boards should be consolidated into a single bargaining unit per region.
In Central Health, workers were asked to choose between NAPE and the Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE).
NAPE president Carol Furlong welcomed the new employees to the union, crediting the outcome of the vote to the dedication and support of NAPE members in the region.
"We are very pleased once again to be chosen as the union to represent health care workers," she said. "NAPE received 965 votes while CUPE received 579. We will make every effort to ensure there is a smooth transition for the former CUPE members.”
NAPE recently won a similar vote against CUPE to represent all hospital support staff employed by Labrador-Grenfell Health. It also won a vote against the Association of Allied Health Professionals Newfoundland (AAHP) to represent all health professionals employed by Western Health.
