Congratulations to James Alexander and Alex Menijvar on receiving their awards
Winnipeg (06 Sept. 2018) — Two members of the Manitoba Government and General Employees' Union (MGEU/NUPGE) are furthering their studies this fall thanks, in part, to their union.
Winners receive $2,000 toward further post-secondary studies
James Alexander, a Juvenile Counselor with the Manitoba Youth Centre and a Corrections and MGEU Local 14 workplace steward, received the $2,000 Ken Hildahl Memorial Award. Each year, the money is awarded in honour of long-time MGEU Director of Operations, Ken Hildahl, to an activist hoping to further their understanding of pension governance issues.
Alex Menjivar, a Planning and Program Analyst with Manitoba Housing and member of Social Sciences Local 47, received the $2,000 Peter Olfert Scholarship to further his Masters studies in city planning at the University of Manitoba. The scholarship is awarded every year by Peter Olfert, former MGEU President, to someone studying in a field that potentially impacts public policy.
More scholarships for MGEU/NUPGE members
The MGEU/NUPGE awards 16 bursaries annually based on financial need. Two bursaries will be available in each of the union's 8 geographically-defined areas: one $1,000 bursary for a MGEU/NUPGE member and one $1,500 for a spouse/common-law partner, child or ward of a MGEU/NUPGE member.
