Help welcome Premier McNeil to Cape Breton

Join the rally to tell Stephen McNeil what you think about his government's cuts to public services and its trampling on human rights. 

New Waterford (24 June 2015) — The Cape Breton District Labour Council and the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) are holding a public rally to greet the Premier of Nova Scotia, Stephen McNeil, when he arrives in town on June 25. 

The rally, being held at 3372 Plummer Avenue in New Waterford from noon until 1 p.m.will draw attention to the how the government has continued its attacks on workers' rights, services in rural communities and good jobs. 

Rally will highlight the Nova Scotia government's attacks on labour, cuts to funding, privatization of public services

Since getting into power, the Stephen McNeil government has

  • attacked the collective bargaining rights of health care workers (Bill 1)
  • effectively taken away the right to strike from all health and community services workers with repressive essential service legislation (Bill 30 & 37)
  • banned the right to strike for university workers when a university is facing financial hardship (Bill 100)
  • been aggressively pursuing the privatization of public services in a number of areas, including Access Nova Scotia, home support, and hospital food services
  • cut public service jobs in communities across the province, including park staff at Whycocomagh Provincial Park and six other provincial parks, closed two Visitor Information Centres
  • cut funding to Nova Scotia’s non-profits, including those serving the blind, the deaf, seniors, and those most impoverished.

The rally is sponsored by the Cape Breton District Labour Council, a local arm of the Canadian Labour Congress. NSGEU is an affiliate of the Canadian Labour Congress through its national organization, the National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE).
