“Whether it’s income inequality, climate change, labour rights, health care, or housing, what happens in this federal election will have a huge impact on this country and our future.” — Larry Brown, NUPGE President
Ottawa (24 Sept. 2019) — The National Union’s 2019 Federal Election Voter’s Guide is now available. The guide provides information for NUPGE members on many of the issues that have the greatest impact on them.
“Whether it’s income inequality, climate change, labour rights, health care, or housing, what happens in this federal election will have a huge impact on this country and our future,” said Larry Brown, NUPGE President. “Every one of those issues, and more, needs to be considered by everyone who is intending to vote in the election, because once every 4 years we get to decide who has the policies we need to deliver a better future for us and the planet we live on.”
Income inequality and climate change are interrelated
Many of the issues are inter-related. For example, income inequality is a very serious issue, and we need to look at how the parties intend to respond, but it’s also an issue that affects many others.
Everyone knows that income inequality is causing serious damage to our economy and our society. It even impacts our ability to deal with other issues like climate change.
Those who are very wealthy have more of a carbon footprint than the rest of us. And the lack of fair taxation that we have been experiencing fuels the rise of income inequality and means that governments have less to spend on responding to climate change.
This means that reducing income inequality has to be part of our response to climate change, part of our commitment to health care for all and to housing affordability.
So one of the things we have a right to know is what the parties are saying about income inequality. That will tell us a lot about how they intend to approach the role of governing for all of us.
On every serious issue, we have provided a careful look at what the parties are saying. We believe it’s in everybody’s interest to know this, and we hope this guide will prove a useful and handy resource.
Looking beyond the rhetoric
There is often a wide gap between how political parties describe their plans and what they are actually doing. NUPGE members are all too familiar with governments who claim to be protecting services at the same time that they are making brutal cuts.
The 2019 Federal Election Voter’s Guide looks at what parties are actually proposing. It also includes information about things parties have said or done that may not be in their election program, but that may affect whether they will keep their promises.
