Green New Trade, a resource for climate and trade justice activists

GreenNewTrade.org identifies concrete solutions that would bring about change in international trade rules — change that would better enable the types of actions needed to address the climate crisis.

Ottawa (29 Nov. 2021) — A new online resource, GreenNewTrade.org, is now available for climate, trade justice activists and concerned members of the public.

The project has been launched by the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives (CCPA), along with the Institute for Policy Studies (IPS), Institute for Agriculture and Trade Policy (IATP), and Rosa Luxemburg Stiftung New York. Learn more here

What do trade rules have to do with the environment?

GreenNewTrade.org provides information on how international trade and investment agreements pose barriers to climate action.

For example, a mechanism known as ISDS (investor-state dispute settlement), which is found in many trade agreements, has been used by corporations to challenge public policies, including environmental ones. This issue has been in the news lately, with the Canadian company, TC Energy, seeking compensation from the U.S. government for cancelling the Keystone XL pipeline (CBC News).

This is just one example of how trade rules can get in the way of action on climate change and a Just Transition.

Calling for action

In addition to being an informational resource, the project also calls for “a just trade transformation,” according to the release
