Support increased, stable funding for community-based organizations in Saskatchewan by contacting your MLA today.
Regina (22 May 2012) - On May 16, David Forbes, Saskatoon Centre Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) presented more than 900 signed declarations in support of stable, on-going funding for community-based organizations (CBO) in Saskatchewan.
The declaration calls on the Wall government to:
- implement a four-year funding strategy to address salary, training and operating cost issues in community-based organizations;
- Develop and fund a comprehensive salary and benefit plan to allow CBO workers to achieve and maintain parity with other public sector workers; and
- Develop service delivery and facility maintenance standards for Boards and Agencies to ensure quality client services and clear standards of care.
Community-based organizations provide, care, advocacy and support for some of the most vulnerable people in our communities. Many of the people served by CBOs are young children, women leaving violent relationships, people with mental and physical disabilities, families in trouble and Aboriginal youth, immigrant families and people living in poverty. These organizations are underfunded; the workers are underpaid; the people who depend on these services are undervalued.
This is work that helps keep communities strong and healthy is far too often overlooked, taken for granted and undervalued by government.
To highlight the problem with the funding for CBOs, workers, clients and members of the public have been colleting signature on the declaration to show public support for the issue. Workers, clients and members of the public were at the Legislature to witness the presentation at into the record.
Pressure needs to continue on the government to ensure that vulnerable communities are not placed at further risk because of lack of funding. Contact your MLA to voice your concern.
