NUPGE and CCLA will chair public inquiry into unlawful police activities during global meetings in Toronto.
Ottawa (9 Nov. 2010) - The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) and the 340,000-member National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) open public hearings this week into the unlawful police activities during last June's G20 summit in Toronto.
Mass violations of the basic human rights and civil liberties of Canadians occurred during the summit.
The hearings will take place Wednesday (Nov. 10) and Thursday (Nov. 11) at the Westin Harbour Castle Hotel in Toronto and on Friday, Nov. 12 at the Fairmont Queen Elizabeth Hotel in Montreal.
The primary objectives of the hearings are to increase public awareness of serious violations of Canadians' constitutional rights during the summit and to hold all levels of government accountable.
CCLA General Counsel Nathalie Des Rosiers and NUPGE National President James Clancy will co-chair the hearings in Toronto.

Individuals or organizations impacted by - or who observed unlawful police activities - will be making brief statements. This will be followed by question and answer sessions conducted by Des Rosiers and Clancy.
Lawyers, journalists and others will also share their perspective on what happened during the G20, shedding light on key legal, political and social aspects of the global event.
The Montreal hearings will be chaired by Des Rosiers and Pamela Boulay, a New Brunswick-based lawyer with NUPGE.
CCLA and NUPGE will produce a report on the public hearings which will be released in January 2011.
