First contract gains for OPSEU employees in Meaford

Arbitration award covers wages, dental, uniforms, time-in-lieu, overtime, vacation, bereavement and more.

Meaford (6 Aug. 2010) - Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE) at Meaford Long Term Care have a first collective agreement.

The union says members in OPSEU Local 289 were awarded terms for an initial contract by an arbitration board headed by Dana Randall after the union and the employer were unable to agree at the bargaining table.

The award was decided by the board according to terms spelled out in Ontario's Hospital Labour Disputes Arbitration Act (HLDAA).

The collective agreement is retroactive to April 1, 2009 and expires July 31, 2011.

The employees gain a number of improvements as a result of their new union contract.

On wages, an issue that was decided by the arbitrator, they receive retroactive increases of 2.6 (dating back to April 1, 2009) and 2% (dating back to April 1, 2010). They will also receive a third increase of 1.75% effective April 1, 2011.

OPSEU also achieved improvements in a number of areas, including big improvements in the dental plan, uniform allowances, time-in lieu, overtime, vacation, bereavement leave and more.

OPSEU organized the bargaining unit in 2008. An arbitration hearing was held in March 2010.
