Also known in many areas as Black History Month, events are being held in communities across the country.
Ottawa (3 Feb. 2011) - February is African Heritage Month in Canada. It is also known widely as Black History Month. This year's celebrations reflect the decision by the United Nations to declare 2011 as the International Year for People of African Descent.
The aim of the year is to strengthen national actions and regional and international cooperation for the benefit of people of African descent. In turn, the UN is seeking to promote greater enjoyment of economic, cultural, social, civil and political rights. The goal is also to strengthen participation and integration in all political, economic, social and cultural aspects of society and to increase knowledge of and respect for their diverse heritage and culture.
In Canada, some people of African descent were born here while others have come from distant lands. They are pioneers, leaders, educators, entrepreneurs, sports heroes and cultural icons. All have left a mark on Canadian history and society.
In 1995, the government of Canada designated February as Black History Month. Events to celebrate the occasion are being held throughout February in communities across Canada and around the world. Check the links below for further details.
