March 21 is the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination.
Ottawa (9 March 2009) - The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) will mark International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination on March 21 by urging all of its members and the public to respect "human rights for all."
The union is distributing a poster for general use (click to download - or order copies from national@nupge.ca) which says that full human rights includes the following:
- The right to organize and bargain collectively.
- A national network of community-based services that allow us to fully participate in society.
- An end to poverty and homelessness.
- Elimination of discrimination in respect of employment.
International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination is observed annually around the world on March 21. On that day, in 1960, police killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration in Sharpeville, South Africa, during the struggle against Apartheid. The day was proclaimed in 1966 by the United Nations General Assembly. It called at the time, and has done so every year since, for the international community to redouble efforts to eliminate all forms of racial discrimination.
