Dalhousie NSGEU members prepare for strike vote

The Employer’s pension contribution proposal is the most damaging to members as it would reduce the take-home pay by more than five per cent.

Halifax (10 June 2011) - Members of the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE) at Dalhousie University are preparing for conciliation and hope that a solid strike mandate from the membership will send a strong message to the employer.

After months of drawn out bargaining, the outstanding issues remaining on the table are wages, pension contribution rates, job security, hours of work and vacation and bereavement leave benefits. The Employer’s pension contribution proposal is the most damaging to members as it would reduce the take-home pay by more than five per cent.

The union local's mobilization committee has already met with bargaining unit members to provide information and to encourage them to get involved. An organzing strategy has been developed with a question and answer document to help members navigate through the process. The committee hopes to have a deadline for ballots in early July.

Members can find further updates on the NSGEU website.
