BCGEU urges members and families to attend rally on Saturday, April 24, at Duncan City Square on Vancouver Island.
Duncan (22 April 2010) - Duncan City Council has voted unanimously to oppose the contracting out of seniors' care and is calling on the Campbell government to "work with concerned parties to address the deterioration of seniors' care" in Vancouver Island's Cowichan Valley.
The resolution was presented to council this week by representatives from the British Columbia Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE).
Concern has been expressed by residents in the valley because of the closure of Cowichan Lodge and staff being laid off at Sunridge Place. The concern has increased with plans to contract out the staff at Cerwydden Care Centre in Duncan and the Lodge on 4th in Ladysmith.
"The continuity of care is critical for seniors. The staff develops a trust with the patients and families over time and to see this disrupted is of great concern," says Darryl Walker, BCGEU president.
A rally against contracting out is planned for this Saturday at 4 pm at Duncan City Square. The BCGEU is urging its members and families and friends to attend.
