Ottawa (27 Sept. 2019) —The National Union of Public and General Employees (NUPGE) is holding a working session for conservation officers in Ottawa today. The meeting is to provide a change for conservation officers to discuss issues they are facing in different provinces. Most conservation officers in Canada are part of NUPGE.
Across Canada conservation officers play an important role in protecting the environment. Their duties range from enforcing laws and regulations that protect natural resources to public education.
NUPGE working sessions a chance to address issues facing conservation officers
NUPGE working sessions enable people in particular sectors to share information about the challenges they are facing and what responses have worked. In the case of conservation officers, the law enforcement role that they play means that they face some unique challenges.
Conservation officers are also dealing with a problem too many others are facing: funding for public services is not keeping pace with demand. The cuts and restructurings that conservation officers have had to deal with have generally made their jobs more difficult.
Conservation officers to participate in the Annual Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Service
The working session was scheduled to allow conservation officers to participate in the 42nd Annual Canadian Police and Peace Officers' Memorial Service to be held on Parliament Hill. The memorial service is to honour peace and police officers who lost their lives in the course of their work.
