Halifax (1 April 2009) - Negotiators for employees of Canadian Blood Services in Nova Scotia have been unable to reach a new contract.
The workers are represented by the Nova Scotia Government and General Employees Union (NSGEU/NUPGE). The union has applied for the help of a provincially-appointed conciliator and further meetings have been scheduled for April 21-22.
Outstanding issues for the union include hours of work and rest periods, retirement allowance, language dealing with double time after four hours of overtime, vacation entitlement and family illness leave.
Employer demands that the union is opposing include the ability to restrict employees from taking temporary positions of nine months or less, increased ability to schedule shifts other than 7.5 hours in length and removal of PIO (present incumbent only) protection to salaries.
