'The employer is threatening to conduct a temporary layoff of the entire bargaining unit.'
Toronto (20 Aug. 2010) - Conciliation efforts have begun to reach a settlement after a 98% strike vote by employees at the Geneva Centre for Autism in Toronto.
The employees are members of Local 548 of the Ontario Public Service Employees Union (OPSEU/NUPGE).
The employer is threatening to conduct a temporary layoff of the entire bargaining unit of close to 100 members, tactic that they have already used once before.
"No monetary gains have yet been offered during bargaining and the employer is claiming a deficit, although financial information provided has been minimal and their actual financial position is unclear," OPSEU says. "With the proposed temporary layoff factored in, the employer’s offer is equal to roughly a 2% pay cut."
OPSEU says stalling tactics by the employer have continued during the initial stages of conciliation.
The employees provide direct service and community support to people with autism and their families.
