BCGEU welcomes opposition call for formal recognition and urges the Campbell Liberal government to act.
Victoria (9 March 2010) - The opposition in the British Columbia legislature is asking the Campbell government to designate March as Community Social Services Awareness Month across the province.
"... In my time with the community social service sector, I've had the pleasure of meeting some of these workers," said Maurine Karagianis, the critic for children and familes.
"They are a most passionate, dedicated and giving group of people, the best you will ever encounter. I'm so very grateful and proud of the work that they do. I hope that all members will join me in saluting the exceptional contribution of B.C.'s community social service workers and join together in the spirit of designating March as Community Social Services Month."
Karagianis' statement echoed support expressed by a number of municipalities urging the province to proclaim March as Community Social Services Awareness Month.
"We thank the opposition for joining with many B.C. municipalities in recognizing the critical services that community social services workers provide in communities across the province," says Darryl Walker, president of the B.C. Government and Service Employees' Union (BCGEU/NUPGE). "We urge the provincial government to do the same."
