The collapse of the Heron Road Bridge remains one of the single largest construction workplace disasters in Ontario and one of the biggest in North America. On that fateful afternoon, nine workers lost their lives, more than sixty were injured altering numerous lives forever.
Ottawa (11 Aug. 2016) — On August 10, 2016, the Ottawa and District Labour Council held a ceremony commemorating the 50th anniversary of the Heron Road Bridge Disaster.
The ceremony also provided an opportunity for the official unveiling by the city of Ottawa of the plaque renaming the Heron Road Bridge to the Heron Road Workers Memorial Bridge.
Participating in the ceremony were the families of those workers who had been killed or injured as well as the President of the ODLC, Sean McKenny, and mayor of Ottawa, Jim Watson, as well as representatives from both the federal and provincial governments, Canada's labour movement and local citizens.
